Typically, when thinking about the “players” of a traveling to volunteer experience, many point out the volunteers who travel, and the community that receives them. More often than not, sending organisations (or the group that arranges for the experience by developing a project with/without the community) aren’t given as much focus. The Traveling Volunteer curates the experiences for the volunteer, so essentially we take the position of managing this process.
However, we have added a new player into the mix – the tourism sectors (accommodation, adventure tourism and recreation, attractions, events and conferences, food and beverage, tourism services, transportation, and travel trade), and their representatives. Many businesses fall under each sector, and it is here where we feature many of the individual and group stories about how volunteers, and volunteering activity, transforms their businesses.
